Our third day started out bright and early with our usual continental breakfast at the hotel, then we headed for the subway. We rode the subway to Battery Park to catch the ferry to The Statue Of Liberty and Ellis Island. While waiting in the long line for security before we could get on the ferry, there was a man chatting with and singing to his captive audience in the hopes of making some money. He picked Ryan out and asked her where she was from. Then he started singing to her and told her if she didn't have any black neighbors to put a picture of him in their mailbox! Silly guy, Ryan was so embarrassed.
The Statue of Liberty was smaller than I expected. But yes, it is still VERY big. It was fun to see, I think mostly because I really never thought I would get to that side of the United States, let alone the Statue Of Liberty.
After a quick 45 minutes at Liberty Island we rode the ferry to Ellis Island. I think we had an hour and fifteen minutes there which was way to short for me. But not the rest of our group. I was the last one to make it to our meeting place, and everyone else had spent some time wandering around the gift shop which I didn't even see. It was very cool to be there and think about the history.
When we got back to Manhattan Island our group split up to do some different things. Ryan and I, along with two other moms and daughters took the ferry to China Town and walked from China Town to Little Italy, and into SoHo and through Greenwich Village. We had a wonderful time doing this. It was fun to see the totally different life styles in these different areas of the island. The first thing we did was ate a hot dog off the street. While in SoHo we spent some time in the first Dean and Deluca store. It is an adorable little market, bakery, gift and coffee shop. One of the things on our list of "to do's" in NY was to get a coffee at Dean and Deluca so, we did and it was yummy! After wandering through SoHo and Greenwich Village we hailed a taxi and got an exciting ride back to Times square!
When we arrived in Times Square we saw a TV program being filmed and were asked to participate but, declined. There was also a musician filming a music video and he asked our three girls to sit in the back of the raft and play along. So Ryan joined in and thought that was pretty cool. We had a fun dinner including entertainment at Bubba Gump and then a few of the dancers went to an African dance class at the Broadway Dance center.
Afterward our roommates joined us for a drink on the top floor of the Marriott Hotel in a revolving restaurant called The View. We paid a premium price for our one drink minimum and enjoyed a nighttime view of the beautiful city. We made sure we were out of there before they started charging the $7.50 per person cover charge.
